The internal combustion engine will produce power through consumption of traditional carbon-based fuel, while electrical energy will be harvested from both exhaust and braking by two discrete motor generator units. It converts this into electricity that can be deployed throughout the lap (limited to 120 kW or 160 bhp by the rules).

In 2013, the Cummins-led team demonstrated a Tier 2 Bin 5 version of the engine on the dyno, and then on a vehicle, while development of the Tier 2 Bin 2 engine started. The HC/NO x release temperature in a cold start catalyst is high enough that the released HC/NO x can be further converted by the downstream catalytic components.

A total of more than 12,000 units have been sold to date, 2,000 of which were sold in 2013. The engine is coupled to a 16-gear manual ZF transmission or 6-speed Allison automatic transmission with hydraulic torque converter. Exhaust gas is treated by a standard passive three-way catalyst that does not require the use of any additives.

The latest analyses of A7 and A8 automobiles of model years 2010 through 2013 with V6 and V8 engines certified according to the EU5 emission standard have revealed that in certain situations, NO x emissions are between 20 and 100 percent above the limit. It stores nitrogen oxides until it is full. Both ports have lower flow resistance.

The ICE will have a new combustion chamber, exhaust system concept and variable trumpets, as permitted by the 2015 regulations. The wastegate is a control device that allows excess exhaust gas to by-pass the turbine and match the power produced by the turbine to that needed by the compressor to supply the air required by the engine.
