Opel and Europcar have agreed to introduce the Opel Ampera extended range electric vehicle ( earlier post ) as a rental car throughout Europe. The market introduction of the Opel Ampera (the European cousin of the Chevy Volt) is due by the end of 2011. L/100 km (147 mpg US) and emits less than 40 g/km CO 2 (preliminary data).

In 2011, the largest dollar volume for Li-ion automotive applications could come from the mini EV and EREV segment. Representative battery pack size is below each segment. PHEVs (blended 10-mile strategy), extended range electric vehicles (40-mile AER) and full EVs begin to make economic sense when gasoline is at about $10/gallon US.

General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011.

The Ampera goes on sale in Europe in 2011, the Spark in early 2010. The Ampera is an extended range electric vehicle based on the Voltec technology used in the Chevrolet Volt. Equipped with a 16 kWh Li-ion battery pack, the five-door, four-seat hatchback has a battery-powered range of up to 60 km (37 miles) (MVEG cycle).
