With subsidies long in place for nuclear, coal and gas in the US along with the cheap cost of production for coal and natural gas, solar is essentially competing with that $0.10/kWh The US has 1,750 MW of PV planned for 2011 and currently employs 100,000 people, more than coal mining or steel manufacturing.

Why hes banking on an obscure Chinese electric car company and a CEO who - no joke - drinks his own battery fluid. The E6 will hit the Chinese market later this year. Last year Oregon had also aggressively negotiated with the Chinese carmaker, BYD , to manufacture its line of plug-in hybrids in the state for sale in the U.S.) Furthermore, changing the battery pack on say a Toyota Prius often costs a fortune, at least in most European countries, so such cars better be VERY cheap, but they’re not.

Experts predict that by the year 2060 global warming, if left unchecked, could result in a temperature rise of seven degrees Fahrenheit higher than temperatures before the Industrial Revolution when man started widespread use of coal and other fossil fuels. The Chinese can promise to do this because they’re modernizing their economy.
