In response to the ongoing discussion about the reliability of the UN IPCC and the climate reports, a group of 55 leading Dutch scientists working in the field of climate change, energy and the environment wrote an open letter. Errors in the IPCC climate change report are being seized by some to discredit climate science.

The United Nations Secretary General and the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) announced have asked the InterAcademy Council (IAC) to conduct an independent review of the IPCC’s processes and procedures to further strengthen the quality of the Panel’s reports on climate change.

Global CO 2 emissions from fossil fuel use and cement production reached a new all-time high in 2013, according to the annual report “Trends in global CO2 emissions”, released by PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and the European Joint Research Centre (JRC). Climate Change Emissions' percentage points to 4.7%.

The report’s findings for the period 1997–2007 present a mixed picture, with some improvements in air pollutants and serious concerns regarding persistent growth in transport’s greenhouse gas emissions. Air travel within the EU remained the fastest growth area, increasing 48% between 1997 and 2007.

The IPCC was established in 1988 by the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme to inform policy decisions through periodic assessments of what is known about the physical scientific aspects of climate change, its global and regional impacts, and options for adaptation and mitigation.

In the examples cited in the report, biomass for biofuels has the largest and widest ranging footprint: from 24,000 m 3 per 1,000 GJ in the Netherlands to 143,000 m 3 per 1,000 GJ in Zimbabwe.
