A study by researchers at Iowa State University has determined that the automotive industry has a very large potential to utilize biobased materials. However, they noted, there are also many challenges associated with the use of biobased parts in the auto industry. Sustainability/carbon foot print.

The study finds that the rebates had a large and positive effect on the market share of hybrid vehicles, largely at the expense of intermediate cars, intermediate SUVs and some high performance compact cars. The reductions in carbon emissions are therefore not great. The Canadian government offered hybrid rebates during 2007-2008.

With payments of up to $4,500 for motorists willing to swap their ageing gas guzzling vehicles for more fuel efficient ones, it seemed like a ‘can’t lose’ scheme with consumers getting cheaper cars, the automotive industry enjoying more sales and the environment boosted by a reduction in harmful emissions. So is this scheme green at all?

We also think that with more people realizing that global warming is our greatest challenge, and that evolving the transportation sector to zero-carbon via cellulosic ethanol plug-in hybrids plus electricity from renewable sources may be our best strategy, the discussions about payback are a narrow answer to big questions. Just the opposite.

The customer will only pay a monthly fee about $240 (US Dollars) which includes a full maintenance service agreement; carbon offset payments and in some countries even all electricity used, and insurance. Today we could be using lead-acid EVs, lead-carbon-acid EVs, or nickel metal hydride or lithium-ion hybrids.
