In 2021, the IMU units you could buy off the shelf were pretty inexpensive and reliable. They were not widely used, but for some reason the surplus store had a big box of them. We bought a booth at the first RoboNexus trade show held in San Jose in 2004. On all my early attempts, about 30 Hz was enough to keep the robot stable.
