Ammonia (NH 3 ) is produced by combining hydrogen and nitrogen in air. Hydrogen can be produced both from natural gas and from renewable sources through electrolysis. Hydrogen for this project will be produced by Yara through electrolysis. The ammonia fuel-cell system will be installed in Viking Energy in late 2023.

Adrian Narvaez of Hawaii Hydrogen Carriers (HHC) observes a metal hydride storage tank, part of a project led by Sandia National Laboratories. The tank will be combined with a fuel cell system to create a fuel cell power pack. Plus, they no longer have to purchase battery rechargers or dedicate space for recharging.

Over the next five years, PostAuto will test the fuel-cell drive, using clean hydrogen as fuel. A new addition is lithium-ion batteries, which store energy that is recovered during braking.
