Researchers at Environment Canada have found that vehicle exhaust is a significant source of isocyanic acid (HNCO), a toxic gaseous acid that is a product of various forms of combustion and a potential health concern. Automobile exhaust is also a known source of inorganic acids such as nitric (HNO 3 ) and nitrous (HONO) acids.

With stagnating demand for gasoline due to rising fuel economy in the nation’s fleet and other factors, further increases to US ethanol consumption would require the use of higher blends of ethanol, either in conventional vehicles or in flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) designed to tolerate blends of up to 85% ethanol (E85).

The transmission is significantly more efficient than traditional torque-converter automatics, resulting in fuel economy levels and CO 2 emissions which are very close to those achieved with a manual gearbox. There are two ways to achieve this partially premixed combustion strategy: one is with high EGR rates to reduce PM formation with low combustion temperatures, the other is by exploiting the properties of fuels. Kalghatgi and his group explored both the use of low-cetane fuels and exhaust gas recirculation (SAE 2007-01-0006).
