EEA finds only mixed progress for Europe’s transport sector in meeting environment, climate goals; GHG emissions up 25% since 1990

Green Car Congress

Evolution of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the EU-28 from 1990 to 2016. Three Member States (Austria, Finland and Sweden) have already reached the 10 % goal. Between 2000 and 2015 the transport sector significantly reduced emissions of certain air pollutants: sulfur oxides (SO x ), nitrogen oxides (nox) and particulate matter (PM).

SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall launch long-term initiative for CO2-free ironmaking for steel production

Green Car Congress

Conventional direct reduced iron is produced by the reduction (removal of oxygen) of iron oxide lumps or pellets at 800-1050 °C—below the melting point of iron (1536 °C)—by interaction with reductants (H2+CO) derived from natural gas or coal. The project will also mean a major contribution to a fossil-free Sweden.

Consortium Launches Britains First Dual Fuel Biomethane Bus; Emissions Cut in Half

Green Car Congress

A consortium brought together by low carbon experts at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in the UK launched the first bus in the UK to run on biomethane gas. The dual-fuel diesel-biomethane powered bus is expected to reduce pollutant emissions and greenhouse gas emissions by around a half.

TOAR shows present-day global ozone distribution and trends relevant to health; public database

Green Car Congress

Ozone levels across much of North America and Europe dropped significantly between 2000 and 2014. Tropospheric (ground-level) ozone is a greenhouse gas and air pollutant that, at high levels, is detrimental to human health and crop and ecosystem productivity.

Emissions of Air Pollutants down in EU-27

Green Car Congress

Emissions of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), a seriously health-damaging pollutant, have decreased by 2% compared to the previous year and by about 12% since the year 2000. Energy use by households (the burning of wood, gas, coal etc) is the most important source of PM 2.5

EEA Report: Trends in European Transport Are Heading in the Wrong Direction

Green Car Congress

Indexed European transport sector greenhouse gas emissions, 1990-2006. Transport continues to contribute disproportionally to Europe’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, poor air quality and noise, and still uses the least efficient modes to move people and goods according to a new report from the European Environmental Agency (EEA).
