Swiss shipbuilding company Shiptec AG, based in Lucerne, and Siemens Energy SRL, Milan, have selected Leclanché to supply energy storage systems for two new hybrid-powered vessels that will operate on Lake Geneva. The first of the nine ships ordered by Grimaldi is currently undergoing sea trials.

Leclanché will supply a state-of-the-art GNMC battery system (65 Ah cells) with a capacity of 10,028 kWh with a maximum voltage of 864 volts guaranteed for 10 years. In addition, it builds modules on its state-of-the-art automated assembly line, in Yverdon, Switzerland.

Cells and modules are produced in-house at the company’s European cell manufacturing facilities in Germany and the company’s new automated, state-of-the-art module assembly line in Switzerland. The MRS-3 comprises 65 Ah G/NMC cells fitted into the latest generation M3 Energy battery modules.

Compared with our prototype, quite a few technical changes have been made: the power supply is now ensured by eleven battery packs in all – and wherever possible we have used already proven components that are ready, or very close to ready, for use in series production. The scope ranges from groceries to building supplies and raw materials.

Think says it has battery supply contracts with three companies, and is moving into production. It plans to begin selling its cars in Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and the UK next year, with projected sales of 10,000 cars in 2009 and double that by 2011. GM's Vue and Volt plug-ins have no firm date to appear in showrooms.

Some years later, I had the good fortune of visiting the huge headquarters of the cipher machine company Crypto AG (CAG), in Steinhausen, Switzerland, and befriending a high-level cryptographer there. A 12-volt DC linear power supply runs the motor and printer and charges the battery. I was fascinated. Peter Adams.

He and Charlie put in a FatBoy Harley Davidson rear tire with belt drive to a 72 volt motor. Jerry is the owner of a PHEV Prius with Plug in Supply conversion kit, plus solar panels on the roof installed by Bob Bruninga, Naval Academy engineering professor. The brakes and suspension were also upgraded.
