The parallel hybrid system consists of a 160 kW (215 hp) BMW TwinPower Turbo engine and an electrical motor with a maximum output of 70 kW. The electrical motor draws its energy from a high-voltage battery pack, housed in the luggage compartment, which can be charged via the grid.

BMW has recognized that they simply teed up GM and Nissan to benefit from the MINI E experience. Today they announced officially that MINI E "pioneers" will be able to extend their leases until 2011. Will MINI E drivers be so loyal to BMW they'll forgo the opportunity to actually purchase a plug-in car?

The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the MCV, which the BMW Group will be launching under a new sub-brand in 2013. The permanent-magnet synchronous motor and the power electronics of the BMW ActiveE were developed entirely in-house.

The MINI E. As the second half of the twelve-month MINI E field trial begins in the UK this week, BMW has released an overview of the outcome of interviews and objective data collected from the first three months of the December to June 2010 phase of the trial. The MINI E is a two-seat development of the MINI Hatch.
