Q: Currently only London can claim to have, in anyway, a widespread distribution of recharging points for electric vehicles – how do you envisage this problem to be solved? Should public money be used to help the supply of infrastructure?

Because fewer homes in the UK and especially dense cities like London have garages, most of the companies offering some form of curbside and pop-up charging solution are in the UK. Shell Recharge has plans to operate 500,000 charge points by 2025 , but it is unclear how many of these will be at Shell retail locations in the US.

The prototype vehicle, called Project PUMA (Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility), is designed to ease congestion and pollution problems in cities. It is based on the Segway Personal Transporter but holds two people, instead of one, and lets them sit, instead of stand. You could even call it Personal On-demand Driving.

A key thing, he said, will be to recharge the batteries at an acceptable time for the electricity grid — to “make sure people aren’t charging at the very peak, peak time,” like late afternoon when the electricity grid is already weighted down by demands like air conditioning.
