For years now, inventors and sellers of electric car conversion kits have been blasting traditional automakers for not providing the 100 m.p.g. Three years ago, the magazine Popular Mechanics even wrote an article prodding the auto industry for not building the 100 m.p.g. based Tesla Motors Inc. Both Ford Motor Co.

These changes have received much industry criticism, with suggestions the move will stifle the growth of EV sales as drivers are put off making the switch. 3 is set to become the people’s electric car with ample range, interior space equivalent to the class above and all the kit you will ever need. What’s changed?

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. General Motors Chevy Volt series PHEV, which it calls "extended range electric vehicle" (EREV), part of "E-Flex" multi-fuel platform. Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10.

And in a true smart grid, electric cars will not only be able to draw on electricity to run their motors, they will also be able to do the reverse: send electricity stored in their batteries back into the grid when it is needed.
