Better Place has extended its switchable-battery electric vehicle (EV) taxi pilot in Tokyo ( earlier post ) to operate through the end of the year. The current trial is part of a program run by the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). Average switch time 59.1

Having already established projects in countries including Denmark and Israel, as well as making breakthroughs in the US state of California, Better Place is now set to embark on projects in Japan and Australia. It will partner with Nihon Kotsu, the capital city’s largest taxi operator.

Better Place introduced its electric vehicle (EV) services platform at the Frankfurt Motor Show, in conjunction with Renault’s unveiling of the Fluence ZE Concept with Quickdrop (switchable) battery system and an expanded agreement with Renault, committing both companies to a volume of at least 100,000 electric cars in Israel and Denmark by 2016.

Japan has gained its first battery-swapping station after Better Place opened the facility on Sunday. The firm known for its work in extending electric car recharging infrastructure, opened the station after joining in a partnership with the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, and Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo’s largest taxi operator.
