While the IMO is taking positive action to address the environmental impacts of air pollution from ships, the rapid change creates significant disruption for both the refining and shipping industries. Currently only about 360 ships have installed scrubbers, since there is currently no economic incentive for the ships to add scrubbers.

At a February 2018 meeting, an IMO-subcommittee announced a proposal to ban the carriage of non-compliant bunker fuel (fuel that exceeds the 0.50% sulfur limit) aboard ships that have not installed on-board ship scrubbers (exhaust gas cleaning systems), Barrow said. As of August 2017, approximately 360 ships had installed scrubbers.

Americans still love their air-polluting and smog-producing gas guzzlers. Most people do know and feel that if we drive electric cars we could reduce the consumption of oil and could reduce pollution. It is seen only one third is taking step to buy at any point of time. Some are still not yet sure to make a plunge in purchase.

Barriers include the increased demand for fuel tanks, leading to a decrease in payload capacity and the relatively high capital cost of the system installation. In this case GHG and other pollutants will still be emitted, but they can be reduced through exhaust gas cleaning systems or carbon capture and storage.

AVTA is also installing a wireless charging system to extend the fleet’s range to ensure the electric buses will be able to serve the agency’s longest rural routes. All 85 buses will have a range of more than 160 miles on a single battery charge. AVTA is anticipating a cost savings as a result of electrifying its fleet.
