In recuperation, the electric motor functions as a generator to recharge the battery pack when the driver takes his or her foot off the gas pedal. A prerequisite for applying as a test driver for the research project is the ability to install at home or work a charging station.

The feedback from customers testing the MINI E and the BMW ActiveE will be fed directly into series production of the MCV, which the BMW Group will be launching under a new sub-brand in 2013. Unlike the MINI E, the BMW ActiveE features a distinctive “intermediate position” of the accelerator pedal, allowing the vehicle to “glide”.

BMW’s Mini is rolling out its electric car in three phases. In 2008 the company released a test fleet of 450 Mini-E vehicles and is getting ready to announce its second phase. Nissan has teamed up with AeroVironment and eTec, firms that specialize in installing public charging stations.

They delivered the cars late, they screwed up the installation of the proprietary charging stations at the homes of lessees and they restricted the range and the easy chargeability of the vehicles.
