Plug-in cars are inevitable. The other carmakers domestic and foreign have less firm but well press-released plans for plug-ins. Veteran automakers, oil companies, and federal and state governments have been both the prime movers and obstacles to plug-in cars in the past and they remain so today. Here's my June column.

The charge stations and installations were paid for with federal stimulus and California Energy Commission grants won by Coulomb. If you are a business in a program area, you can get the same deal - free charge stations paid for by stimulus money. I think it makes sense for public resources to drive the early rollout.

And for this ecosystem to be robust, there must be commonality, especially when owners are plugging into the electrical grid.
