I attended today’s Bryan Cave Clean Tech Roundtable at the Broad Stage at Santa Monica College – thanks to my pal Donna Gentry. And in the US, not only is the Obama administration providing a major stimulus program, but 31 states are enacting incentives and mandates to require clean alternative energy for utilities.

NSWC Crane and AeroVironment have developed a CRADA project with the BIC designed to develop and demonstrate a large grid array battery test and evaluation capability that will be used for evaluation of future microgrid technologies. In addition, the BIC has significant government partners including NSWC Crane and Argonne National Lab.

The automotive industry is living proof that private companies will rarely change their behaviors without a significant stimulus to that change, and furthermore one that needs to be mandated. Without the CAFE standard and stimulus monies to promote green vehicle tech, the industry would not be headed toward a greener horizon.

Private sector investment can also drive green stimulus. Despite decreased investment in transportation and wind power, California still captured 51% of the US’ total $6 billion in clean tech venture capital investment in 2019, as large gains were made at companies that focus on geothermal, smart grid, and hydroelectric technologies.

Electric cars and a smart electric grid have a bright future, according to panelists at a roundtable discussion on the subject that I attended last Friday in Boston. “I Vehicle-to-grid is, I believe, the salvation of the automotive industry in the United States,” declared Marc Spitzer, an agency commissioner who was also on the panel.
