Open Source Civic EV Kit

After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. With rising gasoline prices, I believe the demand for freeway capable electric vehicles is going to increase over the next few years.

And, if you consider lifetime costs of owning an EV versus owning a traditional internal combustion car, even if the initial purchase price of the EV is much more than your combustion car and you have to replace a battery for $4,000 after 7-10 years, the EV still costs less to operate. Now add much cheaper materials and NiMH is now obsolete.

But it is a price that must be paid, and GM should be commended for remaining committed to the Volt. If you build a car as a "kit car" with no real factory, then yes, it will never be an economic success. Not really sure where all the money is going, but it seems like the Volt is already over-priced and under performing.
