Battery-gasoline hybrids go back more than 20 years to the first Toyota Prius, but real mainstream battery-only electric EVs are only in their second decade. These European designs are perfectly good EVs, although their limited battery range and high price compared to the gasoline versions are major drawbacks. It debuted in the U.S.

General Motors will debut its two-mode plug-in hybrid technology—originally intended to appear first in a Saturn VUE, prior to that brand’s sale—in a new Buick crossover vehicle in 2011. GM expects the Buick plug-in hybrid to be the first commercially available plug-in hybrid SUV produced by a major automaker.

More knowledgeable shoppers may even be able to name some upcoming EVs from GM: the Chevrolet Silverado EV pickup , the Cadillac Lyriq luxury SUV, or the EV versions of Chevy’s Equinox and Blazer compact crossover utilities. It lets Chevy focus on passenger vehicles and SUVs, along with fleet sales for its pickups.

The Saturn version of the two-mode plug-in hybrid at the Milford Proving Grounds. As part of the culling, GM has the option to re-badge vehicles from the non-core brands, such as the Pontiac G8, Opel Insignia and Saturn Vue. mpg in 2016, GM’s short term answer is to get greater mileage out of existing gasoline engine technologies.

At the recent SAE 2009 World Congress in Detroit, General Motors engineers presented the first front-wheel-drive (FWD) iteration of their two-mode hybrid transaxle, termed the 2MT70 ( earlier post ), scheduled for its first application in the Saturn 2009 VUE 2-Mode Hybrid light sport-utility vehicle later this year ( earlier post ).

Scientist have confirmed that unlike gasoline cars, plug-ins will get cleaner as they get older -- because our power grid is getting cleaner. The comparison keeps being raised, though studies are conclusive: The "well-to-wheel" emissions of electric vehicles are lower than those from gasoline internal combustion vehicles.

Plans Saturn Vue PHEV-10. Aims to get Saturn Vue on road in 2010; no production goal. Company says its focusing on gasoline and hydrogen. Furia explained, "The SUVs that we just completed that were outfitted with the XHT drive train could have been any SUV made by anyone. See Chevy Volt for latest.
