Micro hybrid vehicles are traditional gasoline- or diesel-powered cars with automatic, battery-powered stop-start systems that shut off the engine while the vehicle is at rest and restart it upon re-engaging the gas pedal. Nickel-zinc batteries are chemically very similar to nickel-cadmium, NiCd.

By comparison, gasoline has 34 MJ/L and diesel about 38 MJ/L. By this metric, air-dried wood contains about 3,500 Wh/L, good steam coal around 6,500, gasoline 9,600, aviation kerosene 10,300, and natural gas (methane) merely 9.7—less less than 1/1,000 the density of kerosene.

Nickel-cadmium batteries from 30 or 40 years ago got replaced by nickel-metal-hydride batteries. And fairly quickly, nickel-metal-hydride got replaced by traditional lithium-ion batteries. Silicon batteries today can charge in well under 10 minutes and that’s less than it takes to refuel gasoline-based vehicles.

The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. What the Volt has that electric cars lack is the ability to extend its range by means of burning gasoline, the most popular fuel among cars in the US.
