The Ramcharger uses two electric-drive modules (EDMs), one at each axle, to get power to the ground. The front electric-drive module -- yes we know this sounds like a fancy way of saying "electric motor" -- makes 250 kilowatts and the rear 238. A 92-kilowatt-hour battery and a 130-kilowatt generator combine to bring the juice.

Range anxiety has been the bugaboo of EVs. Fortunately it’s becoming less of an issue now the newest EVs have a range of up to 300 miles on a full battery charge. Consequently, range anxiety and charging locations are of little concern. Since it was not a Level 2 charger, I knew it would not gain much juice overnight.

Now you can run it solely on electric power for up to 21 miles and plug it in to charge. I didn’t get a chance to take the 4xe off-road during my loan, but the Rubicon comes with all the off-road goodies such as Dana 44 heavy-duty axles at the front and rear and a full-time transfer case with a 4:1 low-range gear ratio.

The company plans to do it with a mixture of all-electric vehicles, like the new XC40 Recharge, and plug-in hybrid versions of its SUVs and sedans. The XC90 Recharge is an example of the second group. It also adds 111 lb.
