Exide and Leclanché launch Li-ion battery JV in India

Exide Industries Ltd, India’s largest manufacturer of lead acid storage batteries and power storage solutions provider, and Switzerland-based Li-ion battery manufacturer Leclanché SA announced a joint venture to build lithium-ion batteries and provide energy storage systems for India’s electric vehicle market and grid-based applications.

Vattenfall contracts with BMW for up to 1,000 new 33 kWh Li-ion batteries this year for storage projects in wind farms

Vattenfall and the BMW Group have signed a contract for the delivery of up to 1,000 lithium-ion batteries this year. Toshiba to Build a Second Li-ion SCiB Production Facility in Japan; Initial Cells and Modules for EVs

Anticipating strong future demand, Toshiba Corporation will construct a second dedicated production facility for its safe, long-life, rapid charge SCiB battery ( earlier post ), in the Kashiwazaki Frontier Park, in Kashiwazaki city, Niigata prefecture. Construction is scheduled to start in April 2010, with a completion date of October 2010.

Researchers demonstrate concept desalination battery

A team from Stanford University and Ruhr-Universität Bochum have demonstrated the novel concept of a “desalination battery” that uses an electrical energy input to extract sodium and chloride ions from seawater and to generate fresh water. A constant current is then applied in order to remove the ions from the solution.
