UPS has entered into an agreement to purchase renewable natural gas (RNG) for its delivery vehicle fleet from Clean Energy Fuels Corp. The deal signifies UPS’ plan to expand significantly its use of renewable natural gas for its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet. UPS and Clean Energy Fuels Corp.

The first vehicle now serves routes in Fresno with the balance of the vehicles to be deployed in Fresno and Stockton as part of a year-long program. Since 2001, the USPS has operated 30 electric two-ton vehicles on the streets of New York City, and these were later joined by a pair of two-ton hybrid electric vehicles in Long Island.

Enterprise Rent-A-Car is adding approximately 5,000 additional gas/electric hybrids to its nationwide fleet and designating nearly 80 rental locations across the country as “hybrid branches.” Louis; Seattle; and Washington, DC. per rental to fund certified offset projects through TerraPass.

As one example in the opening plenary panel session, Peter Darbee, Chairman and CEO of Pacific Gas & Electric Corporation described the opportunity and challenges from his utility’s point of view. Darbee noted that although California has about 12% of the population, it has about 25% of the demand for plug-in hybrids.

The proposed amendments, known as LEV III, ask for more stringent tailpipe and greenhouse gas emission standards for new passenger vehicles sold between 2018 and 2025. The community meetings are currently scheduled for Fresno (12 July); Pacoima (19 July); and Oakland (26 July). Earlier post.)

The Scoping Plan describes the comprehensive range of efforts California must take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 and meet the state’s long-term goals to combat climate change. In addition, liquefied natural gas could be an important fuel in the shipping sector, which cannot be easily electrified.
