Unsurprisingly there is still frenzied interest in the announcement of a vehicle scrappage scheme by Alistair Darling as part of his 2009 Budget. However, an announcement by Ford meant to sweeten the deal to its customers may only raise further doubts about the scheme’s environmental credibility.

The scrappage scheme has put the car industry on track to meet the EU target of 130g/km of CO2 by 2012. That’s the verdict of Clean Green Cars , which launched an investigation that found that average new car CO2 fell by 5.5 km and Audi, which has cut its emissions by 9.6 per cent to 158.2g/km.

The scrappage scheme is only a few days old here in the UK and it has already come under fire. An article in the New York Times criticised the so-called “cash for clunkers&# legislation that would give people vouchers worth as much as $4,500 to replace old cars with new ones. The much derided scrappage scheme in the UK has started to benefit new car registrations for June 09. Overall new car sales fell by 15.7% We are now beginning to see the positive impact of the scrappage scheme translate into new vehicle registrations,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.
