The cars Californians choose set the tone for EV sales for 2021. Here’s the top 10 and their sales (and links to our latest reviews/news): Tesla Model 3 EV – 67,262. Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Tesla and GM both exceeded the state’s 200,000-unit sales cap on rebates. Tesla Model Y EV – 61,022.

What is a surprise to us, was the rebound in sales of the Prius Prime, which was up 128% YOY. And as you can see from the chart below, the the Prius is heading toward 60% of its sales being for the Prime PHEV version. A fourth trend or finding is that YOY sales increased 154% for these EVs with publicly reported numbers.
