Among electric vehicles from automakers that report specific sales numbers for their EV models, the Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV was tops in the US in 2021 with 27,3707 units sold. Another top-selling EV beyond Tesla models that is not included is the Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV, which likely saw 2021 sales of between 20,000-25,000.

Here’s the top 10 and their sales (and links to our latest reviews/news): Tesla Model 3 EV – 67,262. Toyota Prius Prime PHEV – 14,275. Toyota RAV4 Prime PHEV – 7,988. Jeep Wrangler 4xe PHEV – 4,427.

If that’s your theory then you may have to re-evaluate after Ponway, California-based Plug-In Conversions Corp (PICC) completed a software upgrade conversion kit that enables all-electric mode driving at up to 70mph in a converted Prius. The software upgrade will retail for $2,000-$2,500 and be made available for sale later this month.

I f there is any doubt that GM is serious about PHEVs, here is one more story that indicates that they are indeed very serious. Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources, reported Wednesday that first year sales of the automaker's plug-in hybrid could quadruple that of the Toyota Prius' U.S. 23, 2007 -- General Motors Corp.

Kia had its Soul EV on the market and made its presence known, then added the Niro EV (and PHEV & Hybrid), but now is adding the EV6 crossover. The Prius Prime becomes Toyota’s leader with a plug.
