US car maker Ford has some hard work ahead if it is to meet new CAFE regulations and still sell the SUVs and pick-up trucks that are so popular across its home country. The Federal Government now requires a fleet average of 35.5mpg by the 2016 model year - this is an increase from today’s average of 25.3mpg.

Conversions are mostly for the Prius, with a few for the Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner hybrid SUVs. We Promote PHEV Conversion Programs: First CalCars in 2004, then a number of aftermarket companies, have converted over 200 cars — at first most were for fleets, but more and more are going to individual owners.

Single proposals may target multiple fleets and fleet types or diesel emission reduction solutions. The vehicles themselves may include buses, marine engines, locomotives, medium- or heavy-duty trucks, construction vehicles, cargo handlers, agricultural vehicles, as well as those used in mining or energy production.
