3 was the most frequently delivered BEV in Finland, Slovenia and Norway in December. In the German fleet market, the share of BEV and PHEV vehicles ordered increased to around 22% in total, up from around 2% in 2018 and some 5% in 2019. Volkswagen Passenger Cars launched nine new electric and plug-in hybrid models in 2020.

All electrified types contributed to growth as hybrids (HEV) increased their volume by 36%, pure electric (BEV) by 91% and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) by 173%. They made up 77% of total car registrations in Norway, 38% in Sweden and 28% in Finland. EVs were the lifeline.

In 2021, the Volkswagen brand delivered more electrified vehicles worldwide than ever before, handing over to customers more than 369,000 electric cars (+73% versus 2020), comprising approximately 106,000 PHEVs (+33%) and 263,000 all-electric vehicles (+97%). In the company’s home market, one in four Volkswagen vehicles was a plug-in vehicle.

February 2020 registrations of HEVs were up 46% to 59,000; PHEVs were up 153% to 28,700; and BEVs were up 92% to 38,700 units year-on-year.

Global EV and plug-in hybrid sales (BEV+PHEV) topped 14 million units in 2023 ( EV Volumes ) and are projected to surpass 45 million by 2030 ( IEA ). Those vehicles are hungry for electrons, driving growth in charging stations and the infrastructure to support them. EV chargers are more than just high-current electrical outlets.
