Following last night’s unveiling of Tesla Motors’ new lineup of stationary energy storage systems ( earlier post ), more early partners and pilots are emerging. The Tesla batteries will be charged daily from the existing PG&E electricity grid system during off-peak hours, when electricity rates are lowest.

As renewable-energy use becomes more widespread, energy storage could become a major business. Using stationary battery packs to store energy increases the effectiveness of wind and solar. Tesla Motors hopes to exploit this potential market with packs that use the same lithium-ion cells as its electric cars.

Last night, as promised, Tesla unveiled the new, non-automotive product line it had previously teased--confirming that the carmaker will enter the energy-storage business. Under the Tesla Energy brand, the electric-car manufacturer will also sell lithium-ion batteries for utilities, businesses, and houses.
