Exide Industries Ltd, India’s largest manufacturer of lead acid storage batteries and power storage solutions provider, and Switzerland-based Li-ion battery manufacturer Leclanché SA announced a joint venture to build lithium-ion batteries and provide energy storage systems for India’s electric vehicle market and grid-based applications.

The California Energy Commission (CEC) is awarding $1,135,862 to 12 small-scale projects to research that will reduce the cost of producing electricity, save energy and improve the environment. The technology has the potential to increase the generation and efficiency of solar power in California.

In July, the DOE announced that ARPA-E had received approximately 3,500 submissions for the approximately $150 million available as part of the first Funding Opportunity Announcement (DE-FOA-0000065) released 27 April 2009. The projects selected are grouped into 10 areas: Energy Storage (6 projects). Biomass Energy (5 projects).

“I would say that electricity is a vastly superior fuel for the light vehicle fleet,” said Willett Kempton , a professor and alternative energy specialist at the University of Delaware. In effect, cars would be acting like tiny power stations. Finally there may be new energy storage that requires less lithium.
