The program originally set out to demonstrate how a typical American family can significantly lower its electricity costs while limiting its impact on the environment.

A ceramic-based mechanical pump able to operate at record temperatures of more than 1,400 ˚C (1,673 K) can transfer high-temperature liquids such as molten tin, enabling a new generation of energy conversion and storage systems. The pump operates in a nitrogen environment to prevent oxidation at the extreme temperatures.
