Late last year, Volvo launched its very first all-electric model in North America. It’s called the XC40 Recharge, and the earliest versions aren’t cheap, priced from about $55,000 including delivery. That’s partly due to the weight; the electric XC40 is a whopping 900 pounds heavier than the AWD gasoline version.

The problem with battery electric cars is that you can''t take them on long trips, because they take so long to recharge. Would a trip from Los Angeles to New York City in an electric car perhaps refute that statement? Or so goes the common wisdom, anyhow.

Our recent test of a 2012 Mitsubishi 'i' electric minicar was actually the first time we've tested a pure battery electric car in New York City. While the relatively short distances covered in NYC would seem well suited to plug-in cars, there's the big issue of recharging.
