The charge stations and installations were paid for with federal stimulus and California Energy Commission grants won by Coulomb. If you are a consumer, and you get a Volt, Smart, or Ford electric car, you probably qualify for a free home charge station. Free Juice Bar explicitly sells charge stations to offer free power.

I wrote back in December about my unhappy experience attempting to charge my loaner LEAF at San Francisco City Hall's electric car charging stations. Parking in these Coulomb charge stations is restricted to city-owned vehicles and Car Share companies under threat of towing. Juice flows. You see the credit card symbols.

We chatted while he finished charging his LEAF at the recently installed Quick Charger at the new Market Street Whole Foods in San Francisco. His infectious smile alone communicates how much he likes his car. But now they are back on the fence, holding off on getting a plug-in car. I''ll call him Officer Bill.

Electric Vehicle Service Equipment (EVSE) home wall units are priced at between about $1000 and $2500. Plus installation. Is it as complex and time-consuming a process as has been experienced by many new owners of plug-in cars? All plug-in cars these days come with a 120-volt charge cord. Need it cost this much?
