The 1960 model year saw a trio of brand-new compact Detroit cars ( the Corvair , Valiant and Falcon ) appear to do battle with increasingly popular small imports. Sales were strong, and the Detroit Big Three plus the Kenosha One got busy preparing midsize cars to slide between the compacts and the full - sizers.

Today's Junkyard Find is an example of the second type of Marauderization (not to be confused with Moroder ization ) within the world of Ford's Mercury Division. Starting in 1958, Ford's new MEL ( M ercury- E dsel- L incoln) big-block V8 engine was given the Marauder name when installed in Mercury models. Yes, I bought these badges.

Last week, a first-model-year Lark sedan showed up at a self-service yard just south of Denver , and I was there to document it in its final parking spot. The first Studebaker car was an EV that went into production in South Bend in 1902. By the 1950s, however, small manufacturers were being crushed by GM, Ford and Chrysler.
