Groupe Renault is beginning the first large-scale pilot schemes in alternating-current, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging in electric vehicles. Following these, more pilot schemes will be introduced in France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden and Denmark. The pilot schemes will begin in the Netherlands and Portugal.

The long-term goal is to achieve up to 300 kW of charging capacity—enabling a quick recharge in roughly 6 minutes. The development engineers are also investigating how the constant switching on and off of the batteries affects the power grid; the harmonics this generates could knock the grid out of sync.

Electric cars and a smart electric grid have a bright future, according to panelists at a roundtable discussion on the subject that I attended last Friday in Boston. “I Vehicle-to-grid is, I believe, the salvation of the automotive industry in the United States,” declared Marc Spitzer, an agency commissioner who was also on the panel.

Another 5% comes from wind and 5% from hydro. Geothermal is particularly attractive since it’s a “forever&# renewable power source much like wind and solar - but without the intermittency of those clean energy sources.
