GM began contacting its dealers today regarding its long term planning, and is advising approximately 1,100 “ underperforming and very small sales volume US dealers ” that GM does not see them as part of its dealer network on a long-term basis. The actual number of dealers could vary given levels of attrition, etc.

GM is bringing back the Hummer brand as an EV within the GMC brand. During this same time GM created Saturn , a totally new brand, which arrived in 1990 with its own showrooms, advertising and vehicles. For our discussion, Saturn dealers were the delivery and service point for GM’s aborted first electric car, the EV1.

Elements of the new plan include: GM will sell or phase out the Hummer brand by 31 March, with a final resolution no later than 2010. Saturn will remain in operation for the next several years, through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products.

This revised plan also moves up the resolution of Saab, Saturn and Hummer to the end of 2009 at the latest. - A restructure of GM’s dealer organisation with the number of dealers to drop to 3,605 by the end of 2010 - that’s down from 6,246 in 2008. -
