The news that General Motors would relaunch the infamous Hummer name—as an all-electric truck no less—broke a few days before the high-dollar, high-visibility 2020 Super Bowl ad that introduced that vehicle to the world. The name isn’t its own brand; the 2022 GMC Hummer EV will be sold as a model line within the GMC luxury truck brand.

They’ve seen Super Bowl ads for the GMC Hummer EV , or heard news about the lengthy, painful Chevrolet Bolt EV battery recall. Thus, the restructured GM was composed of Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac, while the Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn brands died. The Task Force ultimately agreed.

As part of the new plan, GM will accelerate the wind-down or sale of HUMMER, Saturn and Saab to the end of 2009, and phase out Pontiac by the end of 2010. The revised plan moves up the resolution of Saab, Saturn, and Hummer to the end of 2009, at the latest.

During this same time GM created Saturn , a totally new brand, which arrived in 1990 with its own showrooms, advertising and vehicles. For our discussion, Saturn dealers were the delivery and service point for GM’s aborted first electric car, the EV1.

Elements of the new plan include: GM will sell or phase out the Hummer brand by 31 March, with a final resolution no later than 2010. Saturn will remain in operation for the next several years, through the end of the planned lifecycle for all Saturn products.

In a statement issued today, GM also said that it will be updating about 470 Saturn, HUMMER and Saab dealers on the status of those brands and will be discussing how the remaining dealers will support our retail plans going forward. The actual number of dealers could vary given levels of attrition, etc. outside of GM’s control.
