The market share of diesel vehicles fell to 39.5% in February, as gasoline car registrations increased by 16%. SUVs were a key driver of growth in February, with the volume of vehicles registered up by 24.7% compared to the same month last year, meaning SUVs accounted for 33% of the total market in February. respectively.

Diesel vehicles posted their lowest market share since 2001, as demand fell by double digits in 20 of the 27 markets included in JATO’s analysis, with the biggest drops in the UK (-30%), Scandinavia (-22%) and Benelux (-22%). Despite growing at a slower rate than in previous years, the shift from traditional cars to SUVs continued in 2018.

The main factors contributing to the increase of new passenger cars’ emissions in 2018 include the growing share of gasoline cars in new registrations, in particular in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The market share of gasoline vehicles also increased, constituting 3.6% of the new vans fleet (2.4% g CO 2 /km).

Meanwhile, diesel registrations fell once again in February, although their market share did stabilize at 34%. SUVs, vans and sports cars were the only segments to grow during the month, as compact and midsize cars, and MPVs recorded large drops.
