While Volvo offers a T5 turbocharged model and T6 turbocharged and supercharged model of the gasoline-only XC90, it’s the T8 that’s the focus here. Fuel economy for the Recharge is 55 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) when you use electricity and gasoline and drops to 27 mpg when you don’t charge up the battery.

That series unexpectedly swore off gasoline and staged its first all-electric race on 13-14 August in Hell, Norway. The FIA caps the cost of a single F1 engine at around US $15 million, but some teams try to hide true costs to avoid penalties. So the performance gap remains huge, but Formula E is trying to close it.

Without gasoline, today’s transportation fails. The eminent success of electric vehicles depends on four factors: good battery systems, customer confidence, reasonable costs and, perhaps most importantly, customer convenience. Electricity costs are relatively inexpensive.

Annual use of an EV should be less than the average cost of $8,000 per year for using a gasoline in many countries including the USA. So while my car is powering the great city during the day how will I have juice to drive home at the end of the day? This will be five percent of the nation’s vehicle population.

For on-the-go juice ups, the idea is to exchange your dead battery for a fresh one owned by Better Place. If I’d have to plan on stopping somewhere for an hour in the middle of a 3 hour drive, just to refuel, I’d feel pretty compelled to stick with a gasoline/diesel vehicle. Gasoline prices change fairly rapidly.
