Virtually all major vehicle manufacturers and several start-up companies are offering—or are planning to offer soon—a PEV for sale in the US market. Given the high cost of battery production, a BEV that approaches affordability (with generous tax credits) has a driving range of about 70-100 miles on a full charge.

The former just introduced the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge, while the latter has a limited edition Polestar 1 PHEV and the more affordable Polestar 2 that we’ve tested and came away very impressed.

Since the utility grid has lower demand during overnight hours, the recharging of plug-ins would not add to the peak load. Since the “exclusivity” contracts prohibit service stations from obtaining renewable fuels like ethanol (E85) from other sources, these fuels are not available for sale to consumers. *

Its like having a second fuel tank that you always use first -- only you fill up at home, from a regular outlet, at an equivalent cost of under $1/gallon.
