Azure Dynamics Corporation announced that the Transit Connect Electric ( earlier post ), the result of a collaborative effort between Azure and Ford Motor Company, has received a GSA Contract Award allowing US government agencies, affiliated companies and military installations to purchase the all-electric van.

The Dutch energy company Eneco has signed contracts for the purchase of 50 Smith Ampere electric commercial vans, the electric version of the Ford Transit Connect, to be delivered in 2009 and 2010. The agreement is worth €2.3 million (US$3.4 The contract for the 50 Smith Amperes comes on top of this.

New York City is adding 70 electric vehicles to its fleet: 50 new Chevrolet Volts, 10 fully electric Ford Transit Connect cargo vans, and 10 new fully electric Navistar E-star utility trucks. The NYPD already uses electric scooters and electric powered golf carts on boardwalks, in parks and some transit hubs.

Smith Electric Vehicles US Corporation (SEV-US) and the Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research are participating in the Ohio Electric Drive Initiative as major program partners. Azure Dynamics Corporation announced that AT&T has agreed to purchase two of the first Ford Transit Connect Electric vans. The Ford Transit Connect Electric is powered by Azure Dynamics’ Force Drive electric drivetrain with a lithium-ion battery pack from Johnson Controls-Saft.
