Statoil Canada has produced first oil from its SAGD (steam-assisted gravity drainage) Leismer Demonstration Project (LDP) in the Canadian oil sands after initiating steam injection in September 2010, one month ahead of schedule.

US-based Devon Energy Corporation has received regulatory approval from the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Environment and Water to move forward with the company’s third oil sands project in Canada. Devon expects to deploy approximately $1.3 billion of capital on Jackfish 3 through startup.

Shell submitted the application on behalf of the Athabasca Oil Sands Project, a joint venture among Shell Canada Energy (60%) Chevron Canada Limited (20%) and Marathon Oil Canada Corporation (20%). The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is the primary regulatory agency for the project.
