Open Source Civic EV Kit

After spending the past year and a half converting a Porsche 914 to an electric vehicle, I decided to expand my horizons by designing an open-source electric vehicle (EV) conversion kit for a commonly used car. This project started about a month ago when I became co-chair of the Oregon Electric Vehicles Association.

Since I live in Portland, Oregon, I went to a meeting with the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association and found out about several companies that provided drop-in electric conversion kits for existing cars. I'm currently working with Craig Loughlin out at Camp914 to purchase a 1976 Porsche 914 for the conversion.

I'd like to thank the wonderful folks in the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association for all their advice and input in helping me learn more about the whole electric vehicle scene. I've been blown away by peoples' enthusiasm in sharing information and helping me with this project.

Local enthusiast Steve “LEAF” Erickson led the charge of electric conversions and the trail of early-adopter factory EVs across town and down Sandy Boulevard, finishing in front of the theater as Paine looked on. My 914 was featured on page 38 along with John Benson's 914 DC conversion! Federal tax law doesn't let me get a rebate from the feds because the car isn't a fully qualified conversion; however, I applied to the State of Oregon to get the state rebate of $750. I hope Electro Auto doesn't get even more swamped by the publicity.

Here goes (in no particular order): Things That Went Well During the Conversion The 914 AC kit from Electro Automotive is a good one. If you do your own conversion, tap into all these resources whenever you have an issue. The conversion car came from camp914.com I received much support and encouragement from everyone around me.

On a slightly non-914ev related note, I'm going to be running for a co-chair position within the Oregon Electric Vehicle Association. I hope this pack lasts 2-3 years while the costs of lithium batteries come down.
