Northwestern/Princeton study explores air quality impacts of aggressive conversion to EVs

Green Car Congress

Researchers from Northwestern University and Princeton University have explored the impact on US air quality from an aggressive conversion of internal combustion vehicles to battery-powered electric vehicles (EVs). Across scenarios, we found the more cars that transitioned to electric power, the better for summertime ozone levels.

BP Products to Pay Nearly $180M to Settle Violations at Texas City Refinery; Conversion of Diesel Vehicles to Natural Gas Part of Settlement

Green Car Congress

The settlement requires that BP address violations of Clean Air Act requirements limiting emissions of stratospheric ozone-depleting hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) from leaking cooling appliances. HCFCs and other ozone-depleting substances, when released into the environment, destroy the earth's protective stratospheric ozone layer.

MECA report finds additional NOx emission reductions from new heavy-duty trucks achievable and cost-effective

Green Car Congress

NO x is a precursor for both ground level ozone and secondary PM 2.5 which are regulated under the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) because of their adverse effects on human health and the environment. Better catalysts and urea dosing systems can achieve high NOx conversion during lower temperature operation.

Test of Planet-Cooling Scheme Could Start in 2022

Cars That Think

Up there, 10 to 50 kilometers above the Earth’s surface, ozone molecules absorb the sun’s ultraviolet light, protecting life far below. Even less is understood about the potential risks to people and the environment—could the particles deplete the ozone layer, for example, or significantly alter the weather? about 0.6 °C.

UNEP Report Calls for More Sophisticated Approach to Developing Biofuels; Limitations of Current LCA Studies

Green Car Congress

Here, RME show advantages for primary energy and GHG, but disadvantages in terms of acidification, eutrophication and ozone depletion. While this mainly depends on the feedstock and conversion technology, other factors including methodological assumptions also have an impact. Source: “Assessing Biofuels”. Click to enlarge.

National Research Council report finds it unlikely the US will meet cellulosic biofuel mandates absent major innovation or a change in policies

Green Car Congress

One opportunity to reduce the cost of biofuels is to reduce the cost of bioenergy feedstock, which constitutes a large portion of operating costs, and increase the conversion efficiency from biomass to fuels. Such land conversion may disrupt any future potential for storing carbon in biomass and soil. Barriers and opportunities.

Study Highlights the Importance of Considering Climate Effects of Non-CO2 Emissions from Transport in Mitigation Strategies and Policies

Green Car Congress

The study by Nadine Unger, Drew Shindell and James Wang will appear in an upcoming issue of the journal Atmospheric Environment. S1 offers additional improvements to ozone and black carbon air quality whereas S2 implies substantial degradation of sulfate air quality. Environ. , Unger et al. Click to enlarge. 2009.03.021.
