The electric buses will replace CTA’s oldest diesel buses and reduce greenhouse gases in communities that have experienced air pollution and other environmental health hazards, improving public health and quality of life. By retrofitting the garage to service electric buses, the agency will also lower pollution in the surrounding community.

Region 8 (Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming) will accept applications requesting up to $2,600,000 in grant funds.

Several states have outlawed the practice , such as Maine, Utah, New Jersey, Maryland, Colorado, and Connecticut, but other states are yet to follow. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has spoken up against coal rolling, however, noting that the practice is a major source of air pollution.

San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Control District is replacing 48 trucks model year 1991-2003 with trucks powered by 2013 or newer model year engines. The Connecticut Maritime Foundation is repowering two Tier 0 marine propulsion engines in one ferry with Tier 3 engines. Louis Clean Cities is replacing six school busses.
