Gerhardt had joined with Ed Benjamin of the Light Electric Vehicle Association (LEVA) to offer training programs—and certification— to aspiring ebike mechanics. Ten years later, 11 TEVA of NC members, representing 1 out of every 10 people in the chapter, had followed Gerhardt into becoming Certified Light EV Technical instructors.

I now travel across the country on a regular basis – when I’m not at my desk at our Manhattan Beach office – roll from one conference call to another on my iPhone, and wear a suit and tie to meetings and events. . In fact I’m writing this on my flight back to L.A.

While enlisted, he worked on radio electronics for radar vans at the Army's Aberdeen Proving Ground , in Maryland. He was an IEEE member for 60 years and presented several papers at the organization's conferences.

In July, at the Association for Computing Machinery’s MobiSys conference, researchers from MIT and Princeton University took the best-paper award for a system that uses a network of smartphones mounted on car dashboards to collect information about traffic signals and to then tell drivers when slowing down could help them avoid waiting at lights.
