Ignoring the briefly popular commercial electrics around at the turn of the last century, EVs have been experimental concepts or limited edition runs until relatively recently. GM is bringing back the Hummer brand as an EV within the GMC brand. Rivian will be delivering all-electric pickups and SUVs very soon.

The morning session started out with an hour long press conference, the highlight being the unveiling of the Volt’s 230 mpg preliminary EPA city fuel economy finding ( earlier post ), as well as a tour showing selected elements from the studios of the four GM North American brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen have all not shipped certain electric models to the US and Toyota is shipping the majority of their RAV4 Prime PHEVs to Europe and Asia. The base version of the Kia Niro, for example, is a hybrid but it also comes in PHEV and BEV version. That would still leave eight automakers without an EV.
