The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy has selected seven projects to receive approximately $44 million in federal funding for cost-shared research and development through the funding opportunity announcement, Design and Testing of Advanced Carbon Capture Technologies. DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) will manage the projects: Sand Thermal Energy Storage (SandTES) Pilot Design. and partners will complete a pre-FEED study of a cost-effective steel-concrete composite hydrogen energy storage prototype that is integrated with existing or new coal- and gas-fueled electricity generating units.

The selected projects are intended to improve the economics of IGCC plants and promote the use of the US’abundant coal resources. For example, a 60%-efficient gasification power plant can cut the formation of carbon dioxide by 40% compared to a typical coal combustion plant, the DOE said.

For example, near-term CCS technology applied to coal-fired power plants is projected to reduce the net output of the plant by some 30% and to increase the cost of electricity by 60–80%.
