Equipped with a V6 TSI engine, two electric motors and externally chargeable 10.7 l/100 km (118 mpg US), or 46 g CO 2 /km. Volkswagen’s regular GTE models can be driven approximately 32 miles (52 km) in all-electric mode. Despite this dynamic performance, the concept car has an EC combined fuel consumption of 118 mpg US.

On the gasoline side, the launch engine is the BMW X5 xDrive50i with a new generation of the 4.4L V8 gasoline engine (330 kW/450 hp), to be joined in December by the BMW X5 xDrive35i and the X5 sDrive35i powered by the 3.0L l/100 km (38 mpg US), with CO 2 emissions of between 162 and 164 g/km (–31 g/km), depending on tire format.

Fifty years later, the USA is faced with a similar challenge, energy independency and climatic change. In Germany, renewable electricity generation will be 35 percent by 2020, and 50 percent by 2050. mpg by 2016. Why then do we not have the same clarity of goal for the electricity generating industry here in the USA?

That means we’ll be powering some miles with increasingly renewable electricity that isn't made from imported oil. Over time, we can conserve by reducing the miles we drive.

In terms of the brand, the Passat GTE is a basic building block in Volkswagen’s electric motoring strategy. Together with the plug-in hybrids from Audi (A3 e-tron, Q7 e-tron and R8 e-tron) and Porsche (Cayenne S E-Hybrid and Panamera S E- Hybrid), Volkswagen AG now has ten models in its portfolio driven wholly or partially on electric power.

The Volt is, and always has been, more than than an electric car. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. It offers 18 models that deliver 30 mpg or more. Wired Home Subscribe Sections Cars 2.0 The Obama Administration doesnt understand that. Thats short-sighted.
